POWDER COATING Behind The Bend
Happy Friday everyone! Here at Bend, we all have an insatiable appetite for knowledge. We love to find out information like how products are made, where they draw their inspiration, what materials they are made from and how those materials are used. So, today we are feeding your knowledge appetite by starting a new blog series called Behind the Bend. Every Friday we are going to give you a sneak peak behind the scenes of how our products are conceptualized, prototyped and then manufactured. We will give you background on what materials and finishes we are using and learning about, as well as how we initially discovered them. On todays edition of Behind the Bend we are talking about: Powder Coating.
A little bit of the basics, powder coating is a finish that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder, as opposed to a liquid application like paint. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid form until they are applied and then allowed to dry. The coating is typically applied electrostatic ally and is then cured under heat, which allows it to liquefy or flow and then form the “skin” so to speak as it dries.
We chose powder coating for our products because it creates a hard finish that is much tougher and more durable than conventional paint. Powder coating is typically used to cover metals that are used in things like; household appliances, bicycle parts and even automobiles. On top of choosing to use an extremely durable finish, we have also chosen to use two of the most quality suppliers of that product on the market today, DuPont and Tiger.
Both DuPont and Tiger are companies that are leaders in their industry. DuPont’s mission statement states that they are “rooted in science, driven by engineering, and united by purpose, DuPont exists to solve some of the world’s greatest challenges.” While “TIGER develops and produces strictly environmentally friendly high quality products, which meet state of the art standards.” Both of these sentiments are things that we strive for with our own products. We are proud to be partnered with both of these companies as we strive to make the most quality products that we possibly can.
