THE LUCY LEATHER SADDLE PAD Behind The Bend
One of the reasons that we started this blog was to answer some of our most frequently asked questions. When you work with architects and designers as much as we do, you get a lot of very detailed questions about your products. The design community is a very detail oriented group, and we figured that you may share some of their questions. Today we are going to discuss one of our favorite new custom seat pads, the Lucy Leather Saddle Pad.
The Bend team is a big fans of leather goods. We love the way that genuine leather (such as shoes or bags) wears throughout it's life. When we started to work with leather and developing the leather pad for the Lucy, we spent a lot of time shopping around and working with different types of skins. There are many colors, thicknesses and styles to choose from. Our goal was to keep the saddle as raw as possible.
The saddle is made with 100% genuine and untreated leather. The process of making the pad is relatively simple. We buy the whole skins here locally in Los Angeles. Two saddles can be made from one skin, but it's important to note that these skins are totally raw and natural. Even the pads that are made from one skin can potentially be a little different. As with any natural, raw material, there are slight imperfections that exist and make them unique. We thought about that a lot when we first started making them. It's the thing about leather goods that we all really like.
After the skin is cut to shape, it is then softened in a water bath and laid over the seat of a Lucy Chair. We then hand press the skin over the seat in order to get all of the grooves and geometry of the design. It is then left to dry in the sun before it is hand stitched around the back edge to help it hold it's shape. It is an involved process but as you can see from the photos in the gallery on the left, it's definitely worth the work that is put into it.
Well, that's the Lucy Saddle pad in a nut shell. If you have any questions about the Saddle or any of our goods, feel free to email us at info@bendgoods.com. We are more than happy to answer any questions that you have.
