For an outdoor terrace operating daily in that environment, the material specification is not a design decision. It is an engineering one. Standard powder-coated steel fails in coastal conditions at the weld points, where moisture penetrates the coating from the inside out. The finish holds initially. Then it does not.

The Project
Vintage Grocers is Malibu's defining neighborhood market. Not a chain, not a tourist destination. A place where the community actually shops, eats, and gathers. The outdoor terrace fronting the store is where that gathering happens most visibly: coffee in the morning, lunch through the afternoon, the kind of relaxed outdoor dining that Malibu does as naturally as anywhere in California.
The terrace needed furniture that could hold up to the environment without requiring constant replacement or maintenance. It needed to look right against the raw reclaimed wood cladding of the building and the black steel fencing of the terrace perimeter. And it needed a color that could perform under direct Pacific light without washing out or reading as generic.
The custom teal specification answered all three requirements simultaneously.
The Color
The teal is not a standard catalog color. It was developed as a custom RAL specification for this project, calibrated to read clearly against the reclaimed wood, the black steel fence geometry, and the particular quality of Malibu light.
Malibu light is specific. It is bright, flat, and unforgiving to anything that looks wrong in it. A color that reads well indoors can bleach out or muddy under that kind of sun. The custom teal holds its vibrancy in direct California light without washing out. Against the weathered wood and black steel of the building exterior it creates a contrast that is warm rather than jarring.
The result is a terrace where every element is making a decision. The wood is not accidental. The black steel fencing is not generic. The teal chairs and stools are not a default. When every element in a space is making a decision, the result is coherent. Coherence is what makes an outdoor terrace feel like a destination rather than an afterthought.
The Rita Chair and Rita Bar Stool
The Rita Dining Chair and Rita Bar Stool share the same wire slat construction and geometric profile: a refined form that reads as architectural without being precious. Light enough to move between table configurations. Solid enough to feel considered when it arrives at its destination.
In stainless steel, both pieces are specified for the most demanding outdoor environments.
