Tallula’s: A Coastal Cantina with a Colorful Soul
- Location: Santa Monica, CA (Santa Monica Canyon)
- Architect: Montalba Architects
- Interior Design: Osklo (and the Rustic Canyon Family team)
Tallula’s was a vibrant, beachside destination located just steps from the Pacific Ocean in the historic Santa Monica Canyon. Housed in a building that once held the legendary Mariasol, the space was reimagined to feel like a "home away from home"—a relaxed, coastal cantina where high-design met the laid-back energy of the beach.
Our products were curated to fit seamlessly into this bright, airy environment. In a high-traffic restaurant setting near the ocean, the furniture needed to provide a "vibrant palette" that complemented the restaurant’s eclectic decor, including its hand-painted tiles and warm wood accents. Our Peacock Blue Lucy Chairs were the perfect addition to the indoor and outdoor patio areas. The open wireframes allowed the salty ocean breeze to pass right through, while the striking blue hue mirrored the nearby Pacific, creating a "visual lightness" that made the dining room feel voluminous and connected to the landscape.
The synergy between Bend Goods and Tallula’s was rooted in a shared "California spirit"—a love for color, comfort, and the outdoors. As part of the prestigious Rustic Canyon Family, Tallula’s emphasized local ingredients and artisanal craft, a philosophy that directly mirrors our own commitment to "technical rigor" and the reinvention of industrial materials.
Bend was an ideal use case for this project because the space required a "machine age" durability with a "fine art" aesthetic. The Peacock Blue Lucy Chairs acted as functional sculpture, providing a modern, geometric contrast to the rustic, "shabby-chic" textures of the canyon building. Because the restaurant was situated in a salt-air environment, our high-quality powder coating was essential, offering a lifecycle and "chromatic range" that protected the vibrant blue finish from the coastal elements.
The building itself is a landmark of Santa Monica’s culinary history, and its transformation was led by the award-winning Montalba Architects. Known for creating environments that feel both high-end and approachable, the firm ensured that Tallula’s remained a cultural nucleus for the community for years.
Our chairs were a staple of the Tallula’s experience since its opening chapters, proving that "wire, done right," can become an iconic part of a restaurant's identity. By integrating Bend Goods into this "21st-century renaissance" of coastal dining, the design team created a space that was as "Insta-ready" as it was enduring. Though the restaurant has evolved, the legacy of its bold design and our Peacock Blue seating remains a celebrated moment in Santa Monica's design history.
