Sheats-Goldstein Residence: A Visionary Masterpiece

  • Location: Beverly Crest (Los Angeles), CA
  • Architect: John Lautner
  • Addition Architects: Conner + Perry Architects

The Curation

The Sheats-Goldstein Residence is a masterwork of "organic architecture," where the "California spirit" of spaces that blur interior and exterior is taken to its most radical conclusion. Our products were curated to match the home's sharp, coffered concrete geometry and its seamless transition from the hillside stone to the open sky.

In a property defined by its "fluid structural language," Bend pieces—specifically the Lucy Chair and Lucy Bar Stool—provide a sculptural presence that feels "mainly made of air". We utilized a custom raw metal finish for these pieces to perfectly mimic the home’s iconic concrete textures. The "asymmetric triangular patterns" of the Lucy collection were a perfect match for the house’s experimental geometric patterns, allowing the furniture to function as an extension of the architecture itself.

The Synergy

The synergy between Bend Goods and the Sheats-Goldstein Residence lies in a shared commitment to "technical rigor" and the elevation of industrial materials into art. Originally built in 1963, the house was a philosophical statement about the beauty of the "machine age"—a concept that mirrors our own use of CNC precision and modern manufacturing.

A major highlight of this project is our integration into Club James, the legendary private nightclub and office addition realized by Conner + Perry Architects. This new addition honors the original Lautner vision while applying the technical rigor of modern fabrication to furniture and structural design. Bend was the perfect use case here: providing high-utility seating in a raw finish that feels as "visually radical" as the concrete folds of the club itself.

The Legacy

In 2016, the residence was promised to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), cementing its place in both design and cultural history. This legacy is particularly meaningful to us, as LACMA also acquired the Neon Lucy Chair and Electric Blue Cloud Bench for its permanent collection in 2021.

Our products have been a staple of the residence for years, standing as a testament to the longevity of galvanized steel and the precision of CNC forming in a challenging hillside environment. By living alongside the work of mid-century masters and modern firms like Conner + Perry, Bend Goods continues to prove that "wire, done right," is one of the most expressive and enduring materials in the history of design.
