Rodney Walker Midcentury Landmark - Silver Lake, CA
- Location: Silver Lake, CA
- Architect: Rodney Walker
- Year Built: 1950
The Rodney Walker Midcentury Landmark is a masterclass in the "California spirit" of residential design, emphasizing spaces that blur the lines between interior and landscape. Originally built in 1950, the home is characterized by low-pitched gabled rooflines and floor-to-ceiling walls of glass that dissolve the boundary between the living room and the lush Silver Lake hillside.
Our products were selected to furnish this historic interior with a focus on "clean geometry and honest materiality." In a space defined by openness and light, our pieces—like the Cube Sofa and the Wave Table—provide comfortable, functional anchors that do not obstruct the home's celebrated views. The furniture fits seamlessly into the location, complementing the architectural "mash-up" of industrial materials and natural surroundings.
The synergy between Bend Goods and this landmark residence is rooted in a shared philosophy: that beautiful, considered spaces should be approachable and built to last. Rodney Walker’s work focused on elevating industrial materials into art, a mission that directly mirrors our own design evolution.
The Rodney Walker House was a perfect use case for our collections because our wire and tube furniture functions as functional sculpture. The "asymmetric triangular patterns" of the Ethel Chair and the fluid lines of the Wave Table echo the home’s own structural rigor. By introducing these modern pieces into a space designed for "California midcentury modernism," we reinforce the idea that good design is a timeless dialogue between the past and the present.
Rodney Walker was a defining figure of his era, contributing three designs to the legendary Case Study House Program after studying under the great Rudolf Schindler. Since its completion in 1950, this residence has stood as a designated Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument and a testament to the era’s forward-looking optimism.
Our furniture has been integrated into this historic landmark as a way to "reinvent" the space for modern living while honoring its pedigree. By placing Bend Goods in a property surrounded by some of the most celebrated midcentury architecture in the world, we continue the legacy of the Bauhaus and midcentury masters who knew that "wire, done right," is one of the most expressive materials in design history.
Cube Sofa (Lounge Seat & Ottoman): Featured in the main living area to provide modern, geometric comfort.
Wave Table: A sculptural centerpiece that mimics the fluid language of the home's architecture.
Loop Lounge Chair: Utilized for its "mainly made of air" quality that preserves the hillside views.
Ethel Chair: Added to set a "fun mood" and sculptural presence in the dining or side areas.
Pedestal Tables: Serving as functional, durable surfaces that align with the home's clean lines.
