Lala’s Brooklyn Apizza at Grimm: A Rooftop Renaissance
- Location: Brooklyn, NY
- Designer: Designed in-house by Grimm Artisanal Ales.
Lala’s Brooklyn Apizza is situated on the upper level of the Grimm Brewery, featuring an airy rooftop terrace that perfectly captures the "California spirit" of spaces that blur interior and exterior. In this elevated setting, our products are juxtaposed with a bar serving Physica natural wines and an Italian wood-fired oven.
The curation of the terrace required furniture that could withstand the elements while maintaining a "visually radical" aesthetic. The Lucy collection fits nicely into this high-traffic restaurant environment, where its "light and airy" lattice structure allows the Brooklyn skyline to remain the focal point. The powder coating on our chairs changed the game for this outdoor application, enabling a "chromatic range" and durability that wet paint simply couldn't match.
The synergy between Bend Goods and Lala’s lies in a shared obsession with "technical rigor" and artisanal craft. Just as Lala’s uses an "ethereally thin crust" made from house-milled malted wheat and sourdough culture, Bend Goods uses CNC precision to create complex geometric patterns that are both lightweight and structurally elegant.
Bend was a great use case for this rooftop project because our furniture is engineered to be both indoor and outdoor capable. The "asymmetric triangular patterns" of the Lucy Chair offer an eccentric, modern contrast to the uniquely charred New Haven apizza style, providing a seating solution that is as "considered" as the concisely curated cocktail menu.
Since its inception, Grimm has been at the intersection of "sustainability, craftsmanship, and design ambition". By integrating Bend Goods into their permanent rooftop installation, they have discovery what the mid-century masters knew: that wire, done right, is a modern design icon.
Our chairs have cemented their place in this cultural history, much like our pieces in the LACMA permanent collection. They offer a long lifecycle with a minimal environmental footprint, ensuring that the terrace remains a forward-looking destination for years to come.
Lucy Chair: Providing "sculpture space passes right through" for the open-air rooftop dining experience.
Lucy Bar Stool: Utilized at the terrace bar to complement the "fluid structural language" of the space.
