Getty Center — Trellis Bar and Lounge
- Location: Los Angeles, California
The Getty Center receives more than 1.8 million visitors a year. Perched above the 405 in the Santa Monica Mountains, Richard Meier's travertine campus is one of the most architecturally significant public buildings in California — a place where the standard for every object, every surface, and every space is set by the art inside it.
When the Getty opened Trellis Bar and Lounge, their new outdoor bar and gathering space, they needed furniture that could hold its own in that context. Bend Goods wire cafe bar tables and wire coffee tables were specified for the space, finished in a cobalt blue powder coat that complements the Trellis Bar's bold graphic identity of purple, yellow, and blue.
The result is a space that works at the scale of the institution. The wire tables read as considered objects in their own right — present without competing with the architecture, sturdy enough for daily high-volume public use, and visually coherent with the graphic energy of the Trellis Bar brand.
The cobalt blue finish performs in full California sun without fading. The wire structure keeps the space feeling open and airy, allowing the views of the Getty's gardens and the city beyond to remain the dominant visual experience. Visitors come for the art and stay for the terrace. The furniture is part of the reason why.
