Bend Goods at the Pacific Wine & Food Classic, Newport Dunes

Last Saturday we were at Newport Dunes for the Pacific Wine and Food Classic. One day, full California sun, a waterfront lawn with the bay directly behind it. Hundreds of guests from the Orange County restaurant and design community moving through the space from open to close.

Davis Ink designed and decorated the entire event. They've been one of our favorite collaborators for years. They called us because they needed outdoor furniture that could do three things. Look beautiful in a real event. Hold up through six hours of constant use. And disappear into the experience, the way good furniture should.

Special thanks to the team behind the scenes: Melissa's Produce Stand designed and executed the stunning fruit-and-wall feature at the event's front entrance. Davis Ink Design led the overall event layout, including the Tiki World, VIP area, Bubble Garden, and common spaces and furnished those areas with pieces from their showroom, featuring Bend Goods throughout.

Here is what we brought and what happened.

The Setup

Davis Ink built a lounge area under the fig trees along the waterfront lawn. They used our Peacock Lounge Chairs in white with yellow and orange cushions, paired with gold drum tables. The chairs sat right on the grass. The bay was behind them and the Newport Beach bluffs were across the water. Even full of guests, the wire stayed open and light. The lawn still felt like a lawn.

Along the edge of the event, white Lucy Counter Stools pulled up to black high-top tables under the trees. Guests had a place to land and actually talk, instead of standing around holding drinks. Two people deep in conversation under a fig tree, on white wire stools at a black table. That's the image that tells you an event worked.

On the sandy path between zones, the Tube Bench in white perforated aluminum sat in the dappled shade. Empty, it read as sculpture. Full, it gave guests a place to rest between the wine stations and chef tastings.

What the Day Actually Tested

A wine and food festival is not a controlled environment. It's six hours of direct sun and coastal air. Guests sit, stand and drag chairs around. They set glasses, bags and plates on anything flat. Children. Crowds. Everything outdoor furniture faces in daily hospitality use.

Nothing needed adjusting. Nothing needed fixing. At the end of the day the chairs looked the same as they did at setup. The wire wiped clean. The powder coat held its color through the afternoon sun, the same way it holds up through a season at a coastal restaurant.

This is what BIFMA-certified outdoor furniture means at a real event. Not a rating on a spec sheet. A day like this one.

The View

White Peacock Lounge Chairs with yellow cushions on a green lawn. The bay right behind the white picket fence. Kayaks and paddleboards on the water. Palm trees and bluffs beyond. The chairs didn't compete with that view. They framed it.

Wire furniture works on the waterfront for the same reason it works in a packed restaurant. The open form doesn't close off the space. A solid chair in front of that view becomes an obstacle. A wire chair becomes part of the picture.

The Collaboration

Davis Ink has been designing spaces with what they call a WTF twist since day one. They put a giant fruit wall behind the event entrance and paired it with balloons, a red carpet and a Bend Goods logo. To them, furniture is part of the design story, not separate from it.

Our logo sat alongside Davis Ink and the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance on the sponsor wall at the entrance. That says more about how Davis Ink thinks about furniture than any brief could.

We're grateful for the partnership. We're already looking forward to the next one.
